Wednesday night marked American Idol’s third annual “Idol Gives Back” [1] fundraising telecast. Through performances and video segments of their ongoing charity work, a host of stars came out to support, including Alicia Keys [2], Elton John, Mary J. Blige, Orianthi, Jennifer Garner, Victoria Beckham [3], Josh Groban, George Lopez, Chris Rock, Travis Barker, Jonah Hill, Jim Carrey, the Black Eyed Peas [4], Carrie Underwood [5], and more.
The event by the Idol Gives Back Foundation uses the power of entertainment to help the less fortunate and vulnerable people in the world. Money raised from “Idol Gives Back” will aid charities in the U.S. and beyond [6], including the Children’s Health Fund, Feeding America, Malaria No More, Save the Children, and the United Nations Foundation.
Urging viewers to donate, Jennifer Garner [7] showcased a video of her trip to a rural area of Kentucky, where 45% of children grow up in poverty. Mary J. Blige [8], who recently helped save the Harlem School of the Arts from closure, performed the rock classic, “Stairway to Heaven.”
So far, the estimate of the amount raised is already at $45 million. Join the musical movement! Any little bit you can help makes a difference. You can download video and audio performances from iTunes, where all proceeds will benefit the foundation, text IDOL to 20222 to donate $10, and organize your own [9] local benefit concert for a cause!
