The Father of the Year awards also honors a sports father. Its long list of award recipients from over years has included Isiah Thomas, Babe Ruth, and Sugar Ray Leonard. The 2008 award went to former New York Yankee and YES sports analyst Paul O’Neill. He played Major League Baseball from 1985 to 2001 and has appeared in six World series.
Paul told CGG that he his sons couldn’t be at the awards ceremony because they were working in an orphanage in Mexico called Back 2 Back Ministries. “We went down there last year and ended up planting a whole soccer field in one day,” Paul told us. “From dirt and rocks to an entire playing field. Before we left, kids were playing on it. It’s a neat thing.”
