Fashion forward Pharrell Williams via Vibe
Pharrell Williams, lead singer of N.E.R.D., Neptunes producer, and "Skateboard P" alter-ego, already has his foot in the fashion world with his brands Billionaire Boys Club and Ice Cream Footwear. But now he's taking his mad music stylin knowledge to focus on sustainable materials.
The young mogul has announced that he is now an owner and investor in the new company Bionic Yarn, which makes their materials out of recyclable plastic bottles. If this new brand is anything like his other labels, we're psyched to see Pharrell bring something young, affordable, and hip to the market of green fabrics.
"I’m so interested in the technology behind this," Pharrell told WWD. "I’m also very concerned about the environment and want to make a conscious effort to make it better. We were just looking at this new canvas that is amazing. Basically, the denim is still denim, the cotton is still cotton. The process to make the Bionic Yarn makes it extremely durable and gives it a really luxurious feel. When Nigo’s team — my partners at BBC/Ice Cream — felt the Bionic Yarn cotton, they couldn’t believe how smooth it feels. Our goal is to be the go-to fabric supplier, we want to provide quality fabrics that happen to also be sustainable. We want to do everything from high-end luggage, to high-end denim, to university caps and gowns to Parks Department uniforms. It’s a plus that the fabric brings environmentalism to a whole new level."
The average piece of luggage from Bionic Yarn is made from 18 recycled plastic water bottles, and the average pair of jeans contains seven. With 60 million plastic bottles filling up landfills DAILY, this is one step in the right direction to reverse our damage.
