US comedian and talk show host Ellen DeGeneres married her long-time partner, actress Portia de Rossi, at their home in Los Angeles on Saturday, August 16.
The couple have been dating for about four years and have been open about their relationship, appearing at red carpet events in Hollywood together. They decided to marry in May after the California Supreme Court declared unconstitutional a voter initiative banning same-sex marriage in the state. The 4-to-3 decision paved the way for the Golden State to join Massachusetts, where the state's highest court legalized same-sex marriage in 2004, as one of two states where gay and lesbian couples can legally marry.
And if Portia and Ellen want to have a child via artificial insemination, nothing can stop them. On August 18, California's high court has ruled doctors cannot withhold care to gays or lesbians based on religious beliefs.
The case stems from a San Diego-area lesbian's claim that a private fertility clinic refused to inseminate her because of her sexual orientation.
