The DSC Girls of Plano are determined to make a difference in their community, and have raised over $1,000 for some great causes! Their young age (the girls are 10 and 11) has been an obstacle when fundraising, however, they haven’t let this stop them from achieving their goals.
Who/what inspired you to create a DoSomething.org club?
Our group is made up of former Girl Scouts. We have 13 girls that are 10 and 11 years old. They really wanted to focus more on community service so we decided to start a DoSomething.org Club.
Tell us about the most awesome sauce campaign or project you ever completed?
In June, the girls participated in the American Cancer Society's Relay For Life event. They raised over $1,000 through fundraising efforts like selling Gift Trees and soliciting family and friends. For each Gift Tree sold, they donated $1 to Relay For Life and $1 to Operation Kindness, a local, no kill animal shelter where our group volunteers.
Tell us about a challenge you faced and how you overcame it?
Fundraising is difficult, particularly when you are younger. The girls stayed focused and passionate about the causes and really promoted why we formed a Do Something Club which is to give back to those who need support.
Any advice for other students looking to start (or join) a DS club?
All you have to do is ask! Ask your friends and classmates if they are interested in forming a group that supports a common cause you all believe in. You would be surprised how many people are interested!
