DoSomething.org has seen its fair share of pageants. We've had great projects that allow young people with cancer or young people with disabilities to participate. But some find pageants to remain sexist and bad for self-esteem. Has this long-held tradition go out of style?
We asked members [1] what they thought, and here are some of their arguments as to why it's both good and bad.
GOOD | BAD |
|---|---|
| Helps build confidence | Objectifies young women |
| Improves public speaking | Causes issues with body image |
| Promotes social good/charity | The bathing suit competition (need we say more?) |
| Scholarships | Spotlights only one kind of beauty |
| Showcases your talents | High-heels on super young girls = no (think "Toddlers & Tiaras") |
Which side do you agree with? The debate isn't over; tell us the truth in comments below.
