Why This Third-Grader Can't Wear A Peyton Manning Jersey

Peyton Manning fans are going to have to show their appreciation in a new way, because wearing his jersey is no longer an option. At least for one Colorado school district.

Students like third-grader Konnor Vanatta who wore the jersey to school were told the shirts were banned. Why?  Because of gang affiliation with certain numbers. (Yikes.)

The policy has been around for over three years, according to a Weld County District 6 spokesperson. But 18 isn’t the only taboo number – 13, 14, 31, 41, and 81 also made the list.

"We're Broncos fans ourselves; it has nothing to do with that. We're just wanting to set a consistent solid, example," said district spokesperson Roger Fiedler.

The 2010 National Youth Gang Survey [1] found that there is an estimated 29,400 gangs across the U.S. Shocking right? Check out these other facts.

  1. There are 756,000 gang members throughout the 3,500 jurisdictions in the U.S.
  2. Gang-related homicides increased more than 10 percent from 2009 in cities with populations over 100,000.
  3. Gang members are more likely to migrate for social not illegitimate reasons.
  4. The majority of gang-related homicides happen in highly populated areas.

Do something about this. Start a neighborhood watch. GO [2]
