We've decided to slap the Union Jack all over our site. Gasp! How could we be so anti-American so close to Independence Day?
The “British aren’t coming” and we don’t have to worry about another 1960s “British Invasion” (unless it's from One Direction). Today is about our friends at DoSomething UK [1]. They've officially launched their first campaign, Reverse Riots.
Many of you might remember last year’s London Riots that broke out following the death of Mark Duggan. From August 6 to 11, 2011 England suffered widespread rioting, looting, and arson as a result of what many felt was an unjust death. Young people of England were getting a bad rap. But the fact is, young people both in England and the UK ARE doing amazing things each and every day – whether the media covers them or not.
Reverse Riots challenges these negative perceptions as a result of untimely media coverage and raises the profile of the positive contribution that young people make to society.
To participate, take a photo of yourself holding a piece of paper with a positive statement about what you’re doing to help others with the hashtag #ReverseRiots. Then upload it to the Do Something UK gallery [2].
Want to go the extra mile? Make it your social media profile picture and make others ask “What is Reverse Riots?” Until then, keep calm and volunteer on.
