The Problem

As a student coordinator of Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention & Treatment (ADAPT) at the University of California, Davis, I help empower students to make healthy and responsible choices; promote low-risk behavior and support non-use; communicate negative consequences of high risk alcohol, tobacco, and other drug (ATOD) use; communicate realities, and secondary effects of ATOD abuse; employ strategies that impact environments as well as individual; reduce ATOD-related barriers to academic and social development; and build partnerships among other staff, adminstrators, faculty and students. I lead 90-minute confidential, safe, and non-judgemental educational groups. Group members discuss ATOD issues, alcohol poisoning, club drugs and decision-making skills. Many (not all) students are referred to this educational group through UCD Student Judicial Affairs' (SJA) or Student Housing's conduct system. ADAPT is a part of Health Education & Promotion Program (HEP). I train, lead, and manage ATOD HEP interns who perform interactive outreach programs (i.e. Alcohol Jeopardy! and Drugs at Davis), producing relavent literature accessible to college students, and conduct environmental scans and focus groups to create long-lasting policy changes in order to decrease high-risk drinking and drug abuse on the UC Davis campus and the Davis community.
