My school goes to the Dominican Republic each spring to do community service. I am starting a program where some of our Dominican leaders/friends and I will select approximately 10 committed and deserving batey children who currently cannot afford schooling, and will give them cameras, film, and a basic photography course. They will use the cameras to document their daily lives and the issues in the bateys. Even after we leave the DR and come back to school, I will arrange it so the kids will continue to receive and send film, perpetuating the project. I will develop the film and sell prints online and at local art shows, and all proceeds will go toward the children's tuition for school and access to basic health care. One of my teachers and friends works with the Batey Foundation, so he has resources, connections, and information that will be guiding the project. The idea is that the kids will be doing something creative but also gaining a sense of independence and empowerment, because they are essentially putting themselves through school with their work.
