Be Clean, Recycle Green

The Problem

We are students at the Green School: An Academy for Environmental Careers. Many students selected this school because of its sustainability theme; however, we don’t have all of the sustainability programs we would like in order to be a truly “green” school. One of the programs we are lacking is a comprehensive recycling program. A group of students at our school has been selected to be sustainability interns, and the first project we want to launch is a student recycling program. We understand that not recycle is against the law and we are out of compliance, so we desperately need funds in order to purchase the supplies we need to launch our program. Right now, not all of our classes and common areas are properly equipped with the proper recycling bins resulting in our recyclables and trash getting mixed so that nothing is getting recycled at all. With the proper recycling bins, we will be able to launch an education campaign and ensure our school lives up to its name and recycles green!

Plan of Action

We are going to take a survey of the school in order to determine what recycling bins we need for classrooms and common areas, and purchase them as soon as we receive our grant. After setting up the recycling stations, we are going to launch into our recycling campaign, which will focus on getting students involved by making them feel recycling is important, easy and fun. To do so, we will create an educational campaign that will get students excited about being sustainable. This campaign will include the following components: *Postering with school with cool recycling slogans printed on recycled paper *Design buttons, t-shirts and key chains we will give out as rewards *Create a presentation for grade assemblies about how to recycle, why it’s important and follow up with the game “Recyclaball” (basketball with recycling) *Create activities during Green Week, which takes place in April Award classes and students green dollars (our school’s award program) for recycling right We will measure our success by collecting and weighing recycling on set days of the every month to plot our recycling gains.
