The Problem

Our playground needs a new, handicapped-accessible entrance. Right now, visitors have to negotiate stairs to enter the park and play area. A chain link fence surrounds the current entrance and needs repair. Fencing makes the park feel more like a jail and less like a place to play.

Plan of Action

We will have a community volunteer day to build a new entrance using recycled materials. Community volunteers will work with the City of Richmond's Parks & Rec Dept. to build a handicapped-accessible ramp and connecting sidewalk. We will replace part of the fencing with a new entrance (a simple pergola). Children will build wind chimes out of recyclables to hang from the entrance rafters. We also want to install sub irrigated planters so that plants and flowers can grow on either side of the entrance.
