The Problem

Our campus is covered by turfgrass and is regularly treated with chemical pesticides, is watered often, and needs to be mowed. This is not good for the soil on our campus--large areas of grass are unhealthy and the soil is extremely compacted. There are no native plants on campus, no plants that add nutrients to the soil, no plants that thrive in the climate we live in.

Plan of Action

Coe College's Environmental Club is going to convert an area that was formerly turf grass into a permaculture garden. Our garden will be primarily perennial plants that are from Iowa. We are going to plant a mixture of decorative, flowering plants, and food bearing plants. We mulched the area in the fall and are now planning what to plant. We will order seeds and plant them this spring.
