The Problem

More than fifty university-based tutoring and mentoring programs currently exist to provide critical academic and emotional support for refugee youth as they adapt to the American educational system. However, they work in isolation from one another and (often) the broader field of refugee resettlement. As such the capacity and know-how of these student-run organizations is limited. Volunteers and student leaders do not have the tools and expertise they need to deliver effective and high impact programs.

Plan of Action

Creating Connections - to be held April 12th-14th at Brown - will bring together university students from Brown and across the country to talk about how they can support resettled refugee youth as they work toward being confident self-advocates. Creating Connections aims to: reinvigorate and develop the capacity of students already involved in refugee tutoring and mentoring programs, facilitate resource sharing, and build a national conversation about issues of refugee resettlement and education. As the first annual conference hosted by ARYSE, Creating Connections will serve to launch the ARYSE network. This is instrumental to scaling the impact of ARYSE.
