The Problem

The Lawrenceville DS Club promoted the Green Cup Challange, a month long inter-scholastic energy saving competition between 15 Northeastern boarding schools, at their school. While Lawrenceville did not win the competition they still managed to reduce their energy use by 7.1% (the winning school Millbrook reduced their energy use by 16.3%!) Some of Lawrenceville Energy Saving Projects:Biodiesel Project- Students and faculty worked together to make biodiesel fuel out the Lawrenceville cafeteria's used vegetable oil. Organic Garden Project- The plan is build an organic garden on campus come spring and use it not only as a source of food, but a way to educate students on the process of "earth to plate" Trashion Show- Students were urged to "get creative" with their trash. A trashion show was then held where the students showed off their designs. Dining in the Dark- Students ate their meals by candlelight. Each table held facts on how much energy was being saved. Low-Impact Lunch- Lawrenceville held a lunch made from locally grown organic food in effort to educate students on how their food choices effect energy use. The average number of miles traveled for locally grown produce is 56 miles, while the average number of miles convential produce travels is 14,994.(Greeen Cup Challenge)
