The Problem

There are approximately 117,600 workers who are either looking for day-labor jobs or working as day laborers. Almost half of all day laborers have experienced at least one instance of wage theft, and 44 percent were denied food/water or breaks while on the job. according to a study made in January of 2006, called The National Day Labor Study. In order to help decrease day laborer exploitation communities need to be more aware of the issue so they can act against it.

Plan of Action

My plan of action is to create an awareness campaign that will eventually lead to an event. In the campaign I will explain how the community can become more informed about the issue, how they can become active and to spread the word. Becoming active can be as simple as hiring a day laborer to help tend a garden for example, or to do some landscaping work in someone's yard. Other forms of help could be volunteering your spare time at a day laborer center teaching the workers how to speak English or simply chatting with them to help them improve their speaking skills.
