The Problem

My name is Tyler Page and I am 10 years old. I walked into my mom's bedroom last February and she was just starting to watch an episode of Oprah. I asked if I could watch and she said sure. This particular episode was called, The Little Boy Oprah Couldn't Forget. Lisa Ling went on a rescue mission with the counter trafficking manager for the International Organization for Migration with cameras to show the whole rescue. I couldn't believe that children just like myself and as young as 3 were being treated like that. I wanted to do something right away to help. Before the show was even finished I asked my mom if I could do fundraisers to raise $240 which keeps one child out of slavery for a whole year. She asked me how I would do it and I told her car washes and lemonade stands and then she helped me write my idea down in a letter to share with my 4th grade class. 3 weeks later we had our first car wash and we were able to raise $1,130, enough for 4.7 children. The next day at church my mom told the story and a man we had never met before gave us a check for $500. That made me want to set a goal of $50,000 by the end of 2007. I knew I wanted to do something to help these children but I had no idea we could raise so much more. Now I'm in the 5th grade and we have raised over $22,000 and together with my family we started a non profit company called Kids Helping Kids.
