The Problem

We are trying to rebuild homes that were damaged by Hurricane Katrina in 2005. We work on bringing families home to New Orleans' Lower Ninth Ward, which was arguably the neighborhood most critically damaged by this storm and the subsequent levee failures. Additionally, since Hurricane Isaac in August of 2012, we have been working on repairing homes that suffered damage in that natural disaster as well.

Plan of Action

We use volunteers to provide free labor for homeowners to help them rebuild their homes. We plan to use the seed grant money to purchase materials to help complete Mr. Crawford's home. Mr. Crawford's roof seriously damaged in Hurricane Isaac, which caused significant damage to the drywall and floor in the back bedroom of the house, where his grandson was living. Mr. Crawford is 88 years old and has serious problems with his eyesight due to glaucoma. He served in the U.S. Merchant Marine for 23 years. His grandson works hard and tries to help purchase materials but they are having problems making ends meet, and he is unable to live with Mr. Crawford until the home is fixed.
