McGraw Elementary started at running club three years ago during lunchtime/recess but it has evolved into so much more. We now have 165 students that put on their running shoes after school and spend two hours per week having fun and improving their physical fitness. Kindergarten through 6th grade students walk or run around the field next to our school. They socialize, get fit, lose weight and earn rewards.
Our goals is to continue to encourage children to be active. We feel once they experience the enjoyment of being outside and being active they will continue it as a lifetime activity.
Our long-term goals are to continue being able to offer opportunities for children to run and be active and look for other opportunities to participate in running events in the community.
The McGraw Mileage club has become part of our culture and community and every year for the past three years we have expanded in size and needs.
Things we would like to add to take this club one step further are t-shirts, water bottles, wrist bands and registration fees to enter community runs as a school group. McGraw is our districts Deaf and Hard of Hearing School in our district and the cost of an interpreter is also one of our goals.
