Morton, WA is small town with very little for the youth in the area to do. We have a Teen Center with Drop-In nights for youth in Morton and neighboring towns to come hang out, play games, and do homework. This center is an integral part of many teens lives, as more than a few walk several miles to attend drop-in nights. Recently we spent a weekend working with 30 youth from the area in identifying a need that is being unmet in their community. Due to the economic state of the community many of the youth wanting to play sports are unable, due to the "pay-to-pay" policy in the middle and high school. Beyond this, very few sports are offered. Many of the youth we see on a regular basis aren't interested in "conventional" sports and have taken to skate boarding/skating to fill their spare time and get exercise. Many of them rely on their skateboards for transportation. A few years ago a group was established to build and maintain a skate park, but sadly the man spearheading that group died and the group fell apart. Only recently did the Teen Center Coordinators become aware of this and are working to revive community members still interested in this project. The youth in the area are trying to raise funds to buy maintenance materials, and hopefully expand beyond the two lonely ramps in the park. They are appreciative of what they have, but expectedly get tired of the lacking variety in the park. In effort to supplement the lack physical activity among the youth we see we've implemented an "Open Gym" in conjunction with the elementary school down the street. On Open Gym nights we've noticed a marked improvement in behavior. Many of the youth frequenting our establishment have had a tumultuous past and are prone to destructive and negative behaviors. Yet on nights we are able to play games and be active with them, we see an improvement in their behavior. By improving the conditions, and adding to the current skate park we hope to see a continuation in this noticed improvement. As may of those interested skating are the same youth that show better behavior after open gym nights.
