The Problem

The Prom Project promotes self-confidence and individual beauty by collecting and distributing free prom dresses and accessories to underprivileged high school girls who cannot otherwise afford them. In addition, we strive to offer meaningful opportunities for Prom Project volunteers to grow personally and professionally by giving their time and talent toward a worthy cause.

Plan of Action

During the year, we have dress drives to collect new and gently-used formal dresses. There is a designated "Boutique Day" where girls, referred by the YWCA, are aided by "personal shoppers"/volunteers to pick the dress of their dreams. Through this process, underprivileged teens are no longer excluded merely because of financial barriers. A new self-confidence and individual appreciation is instilled in each of the dress recipients, and volunteers are given a sense of fulfillment.

Project Updates

4/9/08-Since I won the grant, word has spread to countless amounts of girls, through flyers, articles in several newspapers, e-mails, and word of mouth. A burden was lifted off of these girls' shoulders as they were given a dress, makeup, and accessories for free. However the more important factors were not tangible. These girls were pampered and they had a great day that lifted up their spirits and confidence. Mothers and daughters were drawn closer together. Similarly, the volunteers were touched by giving back to the community and viewed the world through different lenses. Everyone was privileged and honored to be a part of this learning experience.
