The Problem

Students are wanting to volunteer to help their school and community but don't know where to find opportunities.

Plan of Action

I started a Do Something club at my school over 2 yrs ago because I enjoy volunteering and wanted others to get involved. I invited my friends to join and attend meetings to find out all the ways they could get involved and volunteer. I helped create a Facebook site to promote volunteer opportunities at school and in the community as I learned about new events and nonprofits that needed our help. Our club created a roster with cell phone numbers so I and other leaders could spread the word quickly when volunteers were needed in our school and community. Our club has had a table at the beginning and end of the yr to promote volunteers to log their hours so they could receive awards and recognition from our county's volunteer organization, Volunteer Loudoun. The club has grown from 10 members to over 60 members in two yrs and many nonprofit organizations have asked us to help out at their events and to run collections for their donation drives for the last 2-3 yrs. Our club provides volunteer opportunities with over 15 nonprofit organizations so volunteers can easily discover opportunities that best fit their desire to serve. Included are pics from 1st meeting in Sept. We had over 80 students that attended! They had the opportunity to learn about our club and ways they could get involved and start volunteering. Here are just some of the drives we've run as well as some of the nonprofit organizations we've supported over the years... Supply Drive 101, Teens for Jeans, Big Shots 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament, Soldiers' Angels, Joshua's Hands, Purcellville Heritage Day, Rock the Runway, Volunteer Loudoun's Make a Difference Day, Waterford Heritage Fair, Turkey Trot, Tree of Life Food Pantry, Habitat 4 Humanity, Loudoun Homeless Shelter, Loudoun Teen Shelter, Baltimore Inner City Schools, Joplin MS( tornado hit schools), "No texting" while Driving Campaign, and more!
