We learned about a group called The Thirst Project. The Thirst Project is a group that teaches people about the water crisis and raises money to build wells. Wells help people get to the clean water that is deep underground. They use pumps to bring the water up so people can drink it.
We met Seth Maxwell, the person that started The Thirst Project. Seth travels to schools around the country to teach students about the water crisis. He uses pictures, videos, and stories to explain the problem to kids. He shows people how serious the problem is and why we need to help.
Seth and The Thirst Project help people around the world by building wells in places like Swaziland, Kenya, Columbia, India, and more.
In just 4 years, The Thirst Project has built enough wells to give 180 thousand people clean, safe drinking water. One well can help up to 500 people.
Wells help people by bringing clean water to their communities, decreasing sickness and allowing people to work and go to school.
But wells are expensive! One well costs between 5 and 12 thousand dollars.
So Seth raises money by having fundraisers and collecting donations.
Seth taught us that we can help too! We are spreading the word about the water crisis and the work that Seth does. We had an assembly where we shared all the information about the water crisis and let other kids in school know what they can do to help. We also had a work share for our families. In addition to spreading the word, we designed water bottles to sell. While we have raised a lot of money, we also had to spend a lot of money to have the bottles made and shipped to us at school.
