I concieved and created "Skate into 08", a New Years Eve skating party on the Olympic Oval in Lake Placid New York. Over 500 participants rang in the New Year skating and drinking hot chocolate provided by Starbucks.
I decided to create this event because there wasn't any family and teen entertainment in Lake Placid for New Year's Eve. The only parties were in bars, hardly a suitable environment for families and young adults. So I decided to combine two of Lake Placid residents and vistors favorite activities- skating and celebrating together at a historic venue in a magical place.
Sponsored by the Lake Placid/Wilmington Connecting Youth and Communities coalition and hosted by the Olympic Regional Development Authority (the company the oversees and operates the Olympic Venues), the event was a huge success, especially for it's first year. The admission collected benefitted two clubs which I am a member of- the Lake Placid Speed Skating Club and the Skating Club of Lake Placid. The intent was that the money would go to help young skaters who perhaps couldn't afford the high expenses pursue their skating dreams.
The event will be repeated next year- plans for Skate into 09 are currently in progress.
