Students For Literacy

In 2006, "Students For Literacy" was founded by my brother and I in cooperation with the Literacy Volunteers of Rensselaer County (lvorc). We are a student-run organization whose goal is to increase awareness and promote participation in local events to help wipeout illiteracy in our community and the world. We currently have 12 students helping us. We hope to increase the number of student volunteers as we get the word out about local events. To date, "Students for Literacy" have collected over 7,000 books, computers, printers, and other equipment for distribution to area youth organizations and to the Girls Secondary School in Awkuzu, Anambra State, Nigeria "Students" have also completed training to teach English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), tutored local immigrant families and students, submitted a grant to the National Education Association, and promoted literacy fundraising events such as the Literacy Run/Walk by creating a special "Students for Literacy" School Champion award. In October, 2007, we will be promoting and marketing the participation of more than 2,500 to join us in attempting to break a Guiness World Record. Funds raised will be used primarily to ship books, computers, and other educational materials, to Nigeria for the creation of a new library for the school and community of 50,000 people.
