We hope practice sustainable living at its core while providing education for our community about the importance of environmental conservation and sustainable living practices. To do this would like to build a site on our boarding school campus where a rotating group of students would be able to live year round in a lodging that is 100% carbon neutral.
Our intention is to house six students, at minimum, in a dwelling that is made of environmentally friendly materials. The house will be equipped with a wood stove for heating and cooking, running water fed from a near-by stream, a Watson-Wick system for safe and sustainable waste disposal and responsible water recycling, and two areas for growing food; a greenhouse and an outdoor garden plot. Power will be supplied by photovoltaic cells situated in an area of maximum sun exposure and a small hydro generator.
The space will be an incubator for ideas and projects that will lead to a more sustainable world. Our school is home to students from over 90 countries and as such the impact of our project will be direct and it will have an impact across the globe. Sustainability is a worldwide responsibility and our project will provide hands on education for driven students from around the world in the ways of sustainable living. Students involved in the experience will write and blog about their experiences of building and living in a carbon neutral building.
