TruckerBuddies Volunteer Shelter Transport Program

When I was returning home on leave from the military, I picked up three retired racing Greyhounds at a track near my former base and drove halfway across the country with them to their new homes. While the three slept comfortably on the back seat, I wondered if I could make more of this happen on a larger scale. TruckerBuddies was born at a truck stop in Tennessee. What if there were a way to link overburdened shelters with others who had room-- what if there were a way to link volunteers to the two? What if, after all this, we found a way to get pets off of death row and into people's homes? TruckerBuddies will work like this: Shelters will be listed based on their need for transport or their willingness to take on needy animals. The two will be matched up, a "sister shelter" if you will. Once the connection is made and agreements are made between the two shelters, this is where the truckers and travellers come in. Lets say John is travelling from Southern California to Washington, or Betsy is travelling from South Carolina to New Hampshire and have some extra room in their trucks. Both could log on and volunteer for a transport. They could pick up and drop off the pets at a pre-planned location. TruckerBuddies, though still in its infancy, has the possibility of saving thousands of pets from being put to death. Sadly, all too often there plenty of contacts between shelters but no rides to get them there. We can change this.
