Our project aims to offer continuing support to pregnant and postpartum inmates through classes, health counseling, and doula support during labor. We are currently bringing together nursing students, seminarians, psychology students, and public health students to develop and teach a postpartum health class at Lee Arrendale State Prison in Alto, GA. This class will provide a safe space for postpartum inmates to learn about their bodies, how to identify and cope with postpartum depression, setting family goals and planning for the future, and to receive health counseling on postpartum issues. The project will be supported by professional doulas, chaplains, and professors at Emory University.
