My name is Mauricio Amaral and I am currently a sophomore at Cal State Dominguez Hills. My campus has always prided it self in being a widely diverse campus, this year we where the third most diverse university in the west. This was said by the book "US News & World Report 2008 America's Best Colleges", but ever since I started attending I've noticed that when they say diversity they only talk about race/ethnicity. I did notice that evem though we are a diverse campus and we had a GSA club, which was never promoted what so ever around school, the campus never talks about it's real diversity including the gay community. We do in fact have Fraternities for Latino men and African-American men and we even offer a Fraternity that is Multicultural (cutural being the key word) but we don't offer anything for the gay men who are obviously on campus. I did some research and found out about Delta Lambda Phi which is a social fraternity for gay, bisexual, and progressive men and I decided that if I didn't step up to the plate and do something about this then no one else would so I decided to start the process to bring DLP to Cal State Dominguez Hills. At this moment we are a mere interest group but soon will start the process of becoming a colony, people who know me are exited about this even though many say that I should just leave things as they are. It's true I could easily just drop this and leave the gay community in the shadow at Cal Sate Dominguez Hills or I could bring change to my campus and make it fully diverse and no matter what people say I will go through with this process. I'm gay and I'm American and I am happy to call myslef both but I will not stand here and watch how we are stripped of our equal rights, I believe starting DLP within my campus is just the start of activism for me I will be part of change.
