In 2004, the U.S. Government declared 68 major disasters in response to hurricanes, tornadoes, wildfires, and flooding. In the past decade, there have been nearly 600 Federal disaster declarations, including natural disasters and terrorist attacks. These events have taken lives, disrupted families, resulted in substantial costs and tragically affected communities across the nation.
For the past decade, AmeriCorps St. Louis' unique Emergency Response Team (ERT) has been a beacon to communities across Missouri and America in times of disaster, and now we're building a team in Mobile, Alabama! We understand that disasters are often compounded by a lack of community preparedness and a disorganization of valuable resources. Much of the devastation associated with disaster situations can be dramatically reduced through greater public awareness, organizational collaboration and effective community involvement. Our highly skilled, trained Members are vital resources that address these important challenges.
ERT Members focus on both critical life safety needs in a disaster and on meeting long term recovery needs. Members are on-call 24-7, and can be deployed for up to six weeks at a time.
In preparation for the unthinkable, ERT Members train neighborhood residents, other national service members and students in safety and preparedness, as well as in CPR and First Aid.
Between emergency assignments, Members will act as stewards of our natural resources in cooperation with the Alabama Department of Conservation, Department of Natural Resources, the National Park Service and the U.S. Forest Service.
The South Alabama AmeriCorps Emergency Response Team is a minimum one-year commitment. You will relocate to Mobile, AL for the duration of your term and participate in a life altering experience! Full-time Members who complete their service earn a Segal AmeriCorps Education Award of $4,725 to pay for college, graduate school, or to pay back qualified student loans. Members of the S. Alabama Emergency Response Team (ERT) will also receive a modest living allowance during their term of service.
