What is 100 Hours of Power - Grand Rapids? National AmeriCorps Week (May 13 through May 20) is a nation-wide celebration to promote AmeriCorps service and the impact of community involvement. In Grand Rapids, Michigan, the AmeriCorps programs at the American Red Cross of Greater Grand Rapids and Camp Fire USA West Michigan Council have picked literacy as our focus for this project. Several AmeriCorps programs and community volunteers in Grand Rapids and surrounding areas are teaming up to complete 100 consecutive hours of service. This massive service project, appropriately named 100 Hours of Power, will begin on Tuesday, May 15 at 12:00 PM and will conclude Saturday, May 19 at 4:00 PM. What is the goal? We intend to place a book in the hands of every child in the Grand Rapids after-school programs. How Will This Happen? One major focal point of the 100 Hours of Power project is: The Box. The Box, is an 8 foot by 8 foot structure with at least one Plexiglas wall. It will be located outside the 28th Street Schuler Books & Music., and acts as collection point for all book donations. AmeriCorps and community volunteers can sign up for one hour shifts (throughout the entire 100 Hours of Power project) to read inside The Box, modeling the act of reading to children and their families. Outside of The Box, check out additional activities such as a children’s story hour or visits from local celebrities. Information about local literacy initiatives and volunteer opportunities will also be present.
