The Problem

Youth and families are stressed! There are few things for youth to do and budget cuts are resulting in limited public library hours, Boys and Girls Club mergers, closures of mental health branch offices and increased demand for activities and services. We’ve seen the consequences of increased boredom and joblessness—more graffiti, more crime—and know that we can make a difference! The Annual Youth Leadership Summit is an exciting event that brings together hundreds of youth from all over North Central Massachusetts to celebrate youth’s strengths and youth leadership, to network and socialize in a healthy and positive environment, and to learn about important issues facing youth today.

Plan of Action

We have been following the PARE model (Planning, Action, Reflection, Evaluation) of service learning in planning and implementing the Summit. The Peer Leaders and I have been working on the Summit since July when we met with community leaders to debrief from the 2008 Summit and begin planning for the 2009 Summit. We have developed a timeline with activities to be accomplished, “due dates,” and the people responsible. We have worked with LUK’s Director of Operations to develop a budget and to find funding. We have been hosting monthly planning meetings which are open to other youth and community leaders. At these meetings we have developed our theme, created subcommittees, designed a website (www.youth-summit.org), identified speakers and workshop presenters, and planned the agenda for the day. We will continue meeting to finalize plans, confirm speakers, and promote our event to schools, community centers and youth. We are also recruiting volunteers to help on the day of the event. On the day of the Summit we coordinate the event, from speakers to room assignments to presenting workshops. We include evaluations of the event which youth turn in for a free gift. Once the Youth Leadership Summit is complete we will have a debriefing meeting to reflect on what went well and things to improve for next year.
