The Problem
When Tyler Broberg, a close schoolmate of mine, suddenly passed away in the summer of 2007 due to an accidental drowning, I found myself devastated and confused. Tyler was a young and vibrant athlete, a brother, a son, an honor student, and above all, he was my friend. Tyler knew how to crack jokes that made me smile at any time of the day, and I always looked forward to the classes in which I sat beside him. I firmly decided that the next chapter in my life would have to consist of doing something for Tyler. He deserved to be remembered for his smile, spirit, and inspiration. Furthermore, Habitat for Humanity was struggling to raise the money needed to build homes in our community so I wanted to come up with a way in which I could help our community remember Tyler while also serving a cause. 1Life2Live's goal was to raise $50,000 to build a home in coalition with Habitat for Humanity in our hometown of Simi Valley, all in memory of Tyler.
Plan of Action
I came up with the idea of “1Life2Live,” which is an organization that I founded whose goal was to raise $50,000 to build a home in coalition with Habitat for Humanity in our hometown of Simi Valley, all in memory of Tyler. I envisioned 1Life2Live (www.1Life2Live.org) in hopes that it would encompass Tyler’s generosity and everything that he cared so much for. Not only was this project something that Tyler would have been proud to have worked on because he was always so family-oriented, but it was local. I have always been a strong believer in the idea that if you want to change the world, you have to start in your own backyard. And, most importantly, Tyler’s friends and family would be able to drive past this home for the rest of their lives and remember how much of a difference Tyler made while he was alive. Out of this terrible and unexplainable tragedy, an unlikely success was born.
