The Problem
In this project, we are making our town aware of the mass murder that happened on 9/11. On the morning of Sept. 11th, we put 3,000 flags, each with a name, in the cold, hard ground. All of them go in front of the high school stadium. By the time school starts, everyone gets a chance to see it. We get cheers and honking cars all to remind us why we do this.
Plan of Action
It all began with an idea. This idea required money, which we didn't have. I and the other founders estimated a cost for 3,000 flags and set out to get the money. The four of us went door to door asking for donations. Some people didn't believe we were a legitimate group and slammed the door in our face. Others were very kind, giving us encouragement and as much as they could afford. After months of collecting, we bought the flags and a few signs to post throughout the halls. The first year was a great success, so the following year we decided to write the names of each person involved in 9/11 on a flag. The amount of volunteers for this was astounding. Many friends and strangers asked if they could help. Putting all 3,000 names down took only a few days with the help of others. In this way, I already felt as if this project impacted many in my school.
