The Problem
Within our neighborhood many students and adults still do not understand the significant impact 9/11 had on our country. It has been over 10 years now, and it is so easy to move on, only giving tribute on the anniversary of the date. My goal is to produce on our campus an interactive memorial to 9/11, for the purpose of inspiring acts of community service and for generating an ongoing conversation between the faculty, students and our community. Because many of the students at school were too young to remember the day (between the ages of 4 and 8), we must rely on retold stories. A memorial on our campus, which we can see daily, would certainly be a reminder to help us feel the importance the day, and what changes it has brought to our nation. We must never be allowed to forget 9/11, and forever, we should honor the memory of those who lost their lives, and those who have defended our Country in pursuit of our continued freedom and safety. Awareness is essential, and an interactive memorial on campus would be a reminder of what our country stands for and the significance 9/11 had on our country. It is my hope that with each passing year, strength, courage and belief in our great nation continues to grow. There are so many stories people wish to be told. The memorial would serve as a venue through which 9/11 can be remembered. It is a day that should never be forgotten.
Plan of Action
My plan of action is to get our community and state involved with the process of building the memorial. Our school will begin the project in the upcoming weeks, with the hope of having it completed before Thanksgiving. I will be organizing campaigns to get students and adults throughout the community to sell the brass leaves for a total of $10,000 to go towards the cost of the Memorial. Then the T-Shirt sales are to bring in an additional $3,000, for a total amount raised at $13,000. Of course, we are open to corporate donations and personal donations are appreciated, as well. By having the community involved in helping, this accomplishes both the goal of finishing the project as well as the spreading of an awareness of the impact of 9/11. I am very fortunate to have my principal and teachers who also share the same vision as mine involved in the creation of this visual, permanent memorial. By its completion, we hope to accomplish a one-on-one, personal remembrance experience. With the design of the memorial and building contractors already in place, we just need to begin the fundraising to support the cost of the project! I know the memorial will positively impact the school and the community in which I live.
