9/11: Never Forget Memorial

the problem:

We tried to create a memorial to remember those who died on September 11, 2001. Each of the 2,977 American flags represented each American who died on September 11, 2001. We wanted to honor those who lost their lives and thank those who protect our freedom. We also provided a way for people to thank service members (a letter writing campaign, etc) We wanted to bring awareness since this was the only memorial in our area to remember 9/11.

why it's important:

As a daughter of a military member and a patriotic American I wanted to help remember those who lost their lives on 9/11 and thank military members for their service.

the plan of action:

We are beginning to plan the second 9/11 Memorial for this upcoming September. The Memorial was held last year on the grounds of a Veteran's Home. We need to plan another ceremony (including speakers), buy candles (candle light vigil) and buttons (to remember), arrange volunteers to set up/take down the 2,977 American flags (for each American who died on 9/11) and advertise the memorial to the community.

Final Grant Update

Winning a DoSomething grant was influential in supporting my efforts to bring about this event. Without this grant, we would have been unable to purchase buttons, replacement flags and candles to use for the event. The presence of these items greatly enhanced the event. I am very appreciative to the DoSomething Staff and volunteers because the money really made a difference in the outcome of my project.
Three highlights of the project were seeing the community embrace the event through the various support and attendance of the program, watching as some of my peers were able to interact with the veterans after the program and seeing the U.S. service members help set up the 2,977 American flags before the program.
The project began two years ago. This past summer, I met with the various volunteers who had helped the year before to help set up for the 2010 9/11 Memorial. We began earlier that summer. We met weekly at the Veteran’s Home to plan the event: delegating jobs, creating the flyer and program, enlisting volunteers, inviting the main speakers, just to name a few things. At least 200 people showed up to the event which began at 6 pm. The community was able to come together to remember. Several aspects of the program were definitely inspiring including the lighting of the candles, the ringing of the bell and the playing of the taps.
