9why it's important:
This project is important to me because I really care about the environment. Ever since I became involved in Cub Scouts 8 years ago, I have fallen in love with the outdoors and I am really concerned about the destruction of habitats and pollution going on in my home city, Atlanta. By installing solar photovoltaic cells, my school can lead the state of Georgia in the solar field. At present, only 0.1% of energy generated in Georgia is renewable, and with your help, we can change the number significantly.
the plan of action:
We have raised about $18000 so far to install solar panels and we just need a few hundred more dollars. If the DoSomething Awards could help fund us, we could go ahead and prepare the roof of our Broyles Art Center and get a professional to install the PV and start generating our own electricity at my school, the Westminster Schools, which would impact over 2000 people. Through the Green Cup Challenge, an interscholastic energy-saving competition, we have already reduced energy consumption significantly, and now we are replacing many windows at Pressly Hall at my school for Low-E double paned, energy efficient windows.
how you can get involved:
By educating students about renewable energy sources and by converting to solar energy individuals all over the planet can help our project. At our school we are trying to educate students about solar photovoltaic cells (PV) and how they reduce pollution and even save money as an example and teaching resource.
