See It

Once a week myself and two other women from my church drive forty-five minutes into downtown Houston to Fletcher Baptist Mission Center. This BMC is located in the inner city where under-privileged people, mostly Hispanics, live. We spend approximately two hours there every Wednesday afternoon working and hanging out with pre-teen/young teen girls who live in the area. It is open to any female between the ages of 11-18, and we spend our time doing bible studies and eating snacks that we have prepared before-hand, as well as learning how to help others and give to the community. It's sort of an escape for the girls to come once a week and get away from all of the crime and violence that they are surrounded by every day. We have come a long way since we first started. Our group has grown and the girls have opened up immensely. We have had numerous opportunities to take them out and show them how to give to their community and the people who are in more need than they are. This past summer we managed to raise $500 per girl and took six of them to Bransen, Missouri for a girls' conference. It's a feeling of tremendous gratification as we see them looking forward to our weekly meetings, inviting us to their QuinceaƱeras, and calling us on the telephone when they are having problems. We hope to continue our work for a long time and see these relationships develope even more.
