The Problem
Progressive young people everywhere are trying to tackle some of the most important issues facing society. But many students do not have the opportunity to learn the skills and build the networks needed to become the next generation of progressive leaders. The Activist Institute is a series of houses across the United States that build communities between like-minded students, provides them with valuable internship experience, connects them with progressive leaders in their area of interest, and helps them grow their progressive network. Students leave The Activist Institute with a life-transforming experience, are deeply committed and connected to working for solution, and help grow the progressive community.
Plan of Action
The Activist Institute will launch a semester program for DC-area college students interested in issues related to energy, the environment, and sustainability issues. We will provide 15-20 fellows with twice a week educational activities, workshops, field trips, and more that will equip them with the tools they need to fight for a healthier planet, environmental justice, and much more. We will host our first semester during the spring of 2012. Students who graduate will have the skills to go back to their home colleges and help fuel movements on their own campus.
