The Problem

I am a student athletic trainer at my high school, meaning that I deal with a lot of first aid in the athletics department and would likely be one to use CPR and an Automated External Defibrillator (or AED) on an athlete that has suffered from cardiac arrest. The main sport that I help with is Softball. Our softball team travels to many different places throughout the season that do not have access to a life-saving AED if it were to be needed. If a victim goes into sudden cardiac arrest, which can happen to anyone, anytime, anywhere, their chance of survival decreases by 10% every minute that the use of an AED is delayed (American heart association statistic). So, the problem is that like previously stated, at the games where we do not have access to an AED, if someone experienced sudden cardiac arrest, there chances would not be good. However these devices cost, at least, $1,199 and as a team we cannot afford to purchase one and our school will not assist us because they say we have on in the gym. However, since this AED is in an alarmed cabinet and needs to be left there for on campus sporting events, it is not possible to take it with us.

Plan of Action

If awarded a grant, I would purchase the Philips Heartstart onsite defibrillator from www.aedsuperstore.com and donate it to my softball team so that if a player, coach, parent, or spectator when into sudden cardiac arrest, we would have the tools necessary to save them. The device would go with us to all practices, games, and tournaments, etc. In our off season when we would not need the device it would be loaned to our school football team, as that is the fall sport that is where an AED would most likely be needed. Then when our season came back in, it would again be in our possession again. Overall, both teams' athlete come to a total of 150 students that that this device could, but hopefully never has to, save, along with all of the staff and 1,000+ spectators at the sporting events that it could save, if needed.
