The Problem

Women in Sub-Saharan Africa continue to be one of the world’s most marginalized groups. Generally speaking, their subordinated status and lack of educational opportunities means they rarely have a voice in their own future, or in the futures of their communities. However, so many of these women hold a deep commitment to addressing the issues of poverty, corruption, and inadequate healthcare facing their families, communities and nation. AfricAid's new girls' leadership training program, the Kisa Project, breaks this cycle and empowers women to become creative authors of their future through a 2-year leadership training program, ongoing mentorship by strong women leaders, and post-graduation support.

Plan of Action

Kisa will provide girls in the final 2 years of secondary school with sponsorships that enable them to complete their education, while participating in a structured leadership training program led by powerful women mentors. The training is designed to give them the tools to transform their own lives and the futures of their communities by developing their leadership and entrepreneurial potential and teaching them vital life skills. They will also directly interact with their sponsors through the Kisa website, engaging in structured dialogue about their cultures, lives, and service and development opportunities. Upon graduation, they will return to their communities to mentor and lead other girls in service and business projects in Kisa’s 6-month Leadership Immersion program, and later use Kisa microloans to start businesses and organizations, thus helping build the next generation of women leaders who will address Africa’s greatest challenges.
