The Problem

The Akaa Project is addressing the struggles of a rural community in the Eastern Region of Ghana. The community has no access to medical care or clean water. Prior to our involvement, there was no access to education. Because of the rural setting, it is difficult for youth and adults to receive income that is not necessarily contingent on the yield of the farmland.

Plan of Action

The Akaa Project seeks to create opportunity through educational, healthcare, and financial initiatives. We work with the community on all initiatives and they are a huge part of all decisions. Over three years ago, we established the Asiafo Amanfro Community School in the community. Three teachers from within the community were hired to teach daily classes. The school has grown from a mud-walled and bamboo roof to an outdoor stucture with a tin roof and cement floors. We now have over 70 children attending daily classes and four teachers. We work with the Ghanaian Ministry of Health to vaccinate children and young mothers for tetanus, polio, and yellow fever. The Project has given and supported hygiene and sex education. We have incorporated hygiene into the classroom as well such as teaching children to wash hands and brush teeth. The Project is also in the process of building a clean water well for the school and community. We have started a community micro-finance project where women have learned to make batik and jewelry from traditional Krobo materials. Through this program, we hope to empower women to follow their own ambitions and encourage their children to do so as well.
