The Problem
Alternative Spring Break works to improve communities across the country, as well as in our own backyard. ASB at Oakland University began in 2008, and has since taken 4 trips; Habitat for Humanity in South Carolina, Hurricane Ike relief in Galveston, Tx., Hurricane Katrina relief in New Orleans, and assisting at the School for the Deaf and Blind in South Carolina.
Plan of Action
Our program began 3 years ago with 10 members. Our second year as an organization had 15 members, and our third year had 30 members. This year we are planning 4 trips with a total of 90 members; Hurricane Irene relief in North Carolina, HIV/AIDS relief in Chicago, poverty relief on a Native-American reservation in South Dakota, and working in a Children's Hospital in Memphis, TN. This is the most ambitious our organization has ever been, and each of these causes has a registration fee. If awarded a Do Something Grant, we would help ease the financial burden for our volunteers.
