The Problem

Suicide has reached into a variety of diverse, multi-cultural populations and ripped families apart. Suicide is getting constant news coverage, but the concept of a solution and outreach seems to be muted. Time and time again people feel ashamed of the feelings they’re thinking. This goes for the survivors, too. The fix may be relatively simple: talking about this tragic event and thoughts of death. The difficulty arises in the application and practicality of such a change. Those affected and afflicted must be made comfortable and encouraged to open up about their pain. Sharing with others, counselors, and friends may be the single greatest opportunity we have to change the statistics.

Plan of Action

Suicide affects the college population in dramatic ways, yet it isn’t often talked about. This is a positive, concrete way to help prevent suicide. The Always Remember Never Surrender Scholarship will provide an award for a junior or senior psychology major. Students must be interested in researching mental health issues that can lead to suicide and working with populations suffering from suicidal ideation.
