The Problem

There is a lack of resources available to refugee youth to assist them in positively processing their experiences of flight, refuge, and displacement.

Plan of Action

The Americana Hip Hop Project was started to use the study of hip hop music and culture to contextualize the historical movement as a platform for social commentary and a tool for community education. In addition to the literacy based learning of the history of hip hop, students are also given the opportunity to develop the technical and artistic skills involved in producing the music. Students gain education in: .Creative writing .Music theory .Digital audio technology .Community involvement Students who enrolled in the program have drawn upon their experiences as refugee youth living in urban America, and their understanding of hip hop as social commentary to create original music that is both powerful, and socially relevant. They have used their music as platform to address a wide range of issues in their community such as: .Civil War .Child soldiers .Religion .Education .Xenephobia .Family relations
