The Problem

Sydney Battersby and Chelsea Miller's project, Anderson CAARES (Cancer Association of Anderson Reaching Every Survivor) started in the year 2009 when they decided to put together a race to benefit the Cancer Association of Anderson in South Carolina. We decided that the proceeds would go to local cancer survivors to help them with their daily needs. Our hopes are that there is a cure for cancer but in the meantime we want to be able to help those who have survived the disease to know that we are here for them and that we want to help them get the things they need to start their lives again.

Plan of Action

We started our project in 2009 with a 1 mile, 5k, and 10k race. Although it rained our first year and we didn't have quite the turnout we hoped for, we managed to raise $1,700 for the Cancer Association. We hope to have even more this year. We plan on making this an annual event so that we can continue to support the Cancer Association of Anderson. Last year we had a number of sponsors and people who donated money and food to help our whole event come together. This year we are planning on adding a half marathon so that we can raise a little more money to meet our goal of $2,000. We believe we have made an impact on the lives of the cancer patients and survivors who turn to the Cancer Association of Anderson for help during or after their treatment because now they will be able to have the resources they need to fight this disease.
