[title] => Argos High School's First Ever Public Health Week 2010
[body] => Is this a...: project ideaWeb site link: http://healthweek.argos.k12.in.usCurrent age (NOTE: this section is for people 25 and younger): 18How many people are directly involved in your project? : 10How many people have you inspired to take action?: 250How many people has your project helped? : 250Location(s)
Argos, IN, 46501See map: Google MapsWhat's the problem you are trying to solve?: With health concerns all around us, are people as aware of the dangers as they think they are? The main objective of my project is to raise awareness of public health concerns at my high school as well as to raise money for my local division of the American Red Cross. Why is it important to you?: This past summer, I lost my father to an aneurysm. At the time, I had no clue of what an aneurysm was or the damage it could cause to the body. Now, I want to raise awareness for public health concerns among my community. With flu season right around the corner and the H1N1 pandemic running amuck, it is important that people are aware of these concerns. Also, because I hope to pursue a career in the medical field, this project will help me to prepare for my future career. What's your plan of action?: Next February, I will organize a public health week for grades eight through twelve at my school. During this week, I will organize events and competitions that follow the public health theme. By participating in these daily activities, students will develop a better understanding of public health. Such activities include a mock disaster triage, a public health symposium, a blood pressure screening, a food drive, and a carpool activity. When students actively participate, they earn points for their homeroom and at the end of the week, the homeroom with the most points will win a pizza party.
Each day of my public health week will have a focus. The first day’s focus will be environmental health. On this day, students will be encouraged to carpool. Those students that do participate will earn points for their homeroom. After school, I will be sponsoring a park clean up at the community park. Any students attending will also earn points for their homeroom.
The next day’s focus will be hunger/malnutrition. Students will be encouraged to bring in canned goods in order to wear a hat at school for the day. All of the canned goods collected will go to a local food bank. Again, students who participate will earn points for their homeroom.
The third day’s focus will be on disaster preparedness. To give the students a better understanding of the preparation needed to survive a disaster, I will be organizing a disaster triage. A triage’s purpose is to save the most lives in the least amount of time. This is necessary when natural disasters or terrorist attacks take place. A group of about forty students will be given an index card with an injury listed on the card. These students must then act out their injuries as volunteers try to evaluate the severity of each injury.
The fourth day’s focus will be personal health. On this day, I am arranging for professionals to take blood pressure readings for students willing to be screened. Again, points will be determined based on participation.
The final activity will be a public health symposium. Throughout the public health week, students will be working on a poster for a public health issue that can range from STD’s to H1N1. Then, the students will vote on the best project in each category. The top project from each category will then present to the entire school on this final day of the public health week.
On the evening of the final day of my public health week, I will be sponsoring a fundraiser at the home basketball game at my school. All of the proceeds from this fundraiser will be donated to the local chapter of the American Red Cross. The fundraiser is called "Dash for Cash." Fans will pay a dollar for a raffle ticket. When all of the money has been collected and counted, fifty percent will be put out on the middle of the basketball court during half-time. Tickets will be drawn and the winners will get a chance to dash for as much cash as they can grab in a given amount of time. The other fifty percent of the money raised will go to the American Red Cross. This is a simple fundraiser and will make a great half-time show!
I know that I am just beginning this project and I know that it is going to be an immense amount of work. However, I believe that it is worth the effort.
How Can Others Help?: I will be asking several local businesses for financial support and for prizes for my public health week. Incentives will be helpful in getting the most participation possible from the students. Any financial help will be appreciated! The cost of the tri-fold poster boards for the public health symposium will cost me $130 alone!
