The Problem

The tornado storms in late April have affected the lives of thousands, including many school age children. Unfortunately, these school children are oftentimes the least capable of dealing with the disaster. In the aftermath of the tornado storms, we see supplies flowing in to help with the physical needs of the victims. However, the need to heal the spirits and the hearts is often overlooked. Art is a powerful tool that can help lift the spirits of those in distress. On the other hand, we also see a growing indifference among the young generation who have been living comfortable lives. They seem to have little concern for the events that took place outside of their small world. We want to use art to open their minds and their hearts. We want to educate them about the tornado disaster and those people who are in need. We want to get them involved, so they become more aware of the outside world, and understand how they can heal using the power of art.

Plan of Action

We have already contacted and earned the support of a local elementary school, Joe A. Gonsalves Elementary School in Cerritos, California. We provided a presentation to over 600 K-6 students at Joe A. Gonsalves Elementary. We educated the students about the tornado disaster and encouraged them to create artwork to help raise funds. Our next steps involve providing art supplies, so that the students can participate. We will set up a special website to upload and showcase the artwork when they are collected. We will raise money for the tornado victims and donate this money to pay for art supplies for schools destroyed by the tornadoes. The first impact we made was among the principal and teachers of Joe A. Gonsalves Elementary School. They were delighted to hear about our project, and were excited to be able to help make it happen. The next impact we made was with the students of Joe A. Gonsalves Elementary. Students are amazed that high school students like us are able to make a difference in society. They are curious to find out how everything will work, and they seem to want to get involved and help. Going forward, we hope to continue making impact to other people, the parents of the Gonsalves Elementary students, our donors, and eventually the students who we send our money to.
