The Problem

Nearly 15% of Georgians live in poverty. In Fulton County, almost 25% are in poverty. Approximately 58,900 different people are now receiving emergency food each week through a network of more than 700 nonprofit partner agencies served by the Atlanta Community Food Bank, an increase of 39% over the past four years. About 80% of client households served by Atlanta Community Food Bank partner agencies reported having an income below the federal poverty level (ACFB, Feeding America Study, 2010). These families need help. The Product Rescue Center provides an opportunity for volunteers to help with the package operations of food items to ensure that donations will be safe and wholesome for distribution to people in need. Approximately 800-1000 volunteers assist the Atlanta Food Bank each month sorting and packing food boxes at the Product Resource Center.

Plan of Action

In the month of November, we will start the Atlanta Food Bank Project. The Atlanta Food Bank Project will be held at the Product Rescue Center. The Product Rescue Center is the area of the food bank where all food drive and salvaged food items are brought to be inspected and packaged by volunteers for distribution to more than 700 nonprofit partner agencies. We will assist the agency by inspecting, sorting and packaging these goods.
