The Problem
ACAASU is here to help high school and college aged students, predominantly first and second generation Asian Americans, as they attempt to realize who they are. Difficulties tend to arise when faced with what can be opposing lifestyles. Familial pressures to follow tradition and listen to your parents without resistance encounter societal pressures that ask for you to follow a more mainstream and American lifestyle. ACAASU strives to create a medium for discussion, education, and growth in the youth of today; by letting students know that there is an organization that understands the problems they are facing and has the desire to see them progress in their life.
Plan of Action
The plan of action is broken into chronological phases. In April 2010, after applications and interviews, the board for this organization was selected by the directors. By August 2010, the goal is to have contacted and outreached to local and national organizations, both non-profit and pro-social businesses, and built connections with all Atlanta based affiliated organizations. We’ve started and mostly accomplished this task. We also plan on having contacted the speakers, panelists, performers, artists, musicians, singers, educators, politicians, etc. that support our cause on minority issues and awareness to attend, which we have also started to do. By the end of August we have planned to finalize the annual major conference, as well as having built the educational background and awareness to utilize in the fall. Every month in the fall we plan on hosting workshops and retreats, by students, for students, at local high schools to increase awareness that is not taught at that level on multiple identities, minority issues, etc. Throughout September, October, and November, we also hope to work in the community and facilitate others to volunteer as well. By mid-October, the travel costs and honorariums for speakers and artists for the annual conference in March, including contractual agreements, will be finalized. Starting November, registration process will start for high school students, university students, and community organizations and those interested. Starting August we will be meeting on a weekly basis with students from Emory, George Tech, and Georgia State University to collaborate to and develop these workshops and outreach efforts for the Atlanta community. My position is Coordinator in the Department of Finance of the Atlantic Coast Asian American Student Union, and I work on developing and outreaching our finance effort in our overall organization.
